According to the CIB, the construction industry is the sector that consumes the most natural resources, from the production of materials, the execution of the work and its operation over the building’s useful life, generating considerable environmental impacts. This sector takes about 75% of everything that is extracted from nature. Of this 75% only 25% to 50% is actually used, and almost half is wasted through waste generation. At the end of a building’s life, its demolition means sending tons of waste to landfill.

It is therefore urgent to stop the simple demolition of a building and proceed to its dismantling step by step and its selective deconstruction, in order to properly value the removed materials, promoting their reintegration into new uses”, warns Aline Guerreiro, referring to the circular economy in the construction sector.

The circular economy enables the introduction of waste into the production of new materials or the reuse of materials taken from end-of-life buildings. Therefore, the system applied to this sector will not only reduce the need for extraction of new raw materials, but will also reduce the waste production, opening the door to a new market: the production of new materials from existing materials. This is an environmental, social and economic added value.

Following this logic, the Portal of Sustainable Construction embraces this opportunity to have on display materials and products that already strongly contribute to the circular economy in the construction sector. Visit us!
